Michelle Handelman's Laughing Lounge is
inspired by the German cult film Kamikaze 1989,
in which surveillance monitors broadcast a laughing
contest 24 hrs a day, and the laughing clubs of
India, where people laugh in unison for physical
and spiritual healing.
Handelman turns the front space of the gallery into
a laughing lounge where the public can sit, drink and
laugh till it hurts.
Surveillance cameras project the hysteria onto
mirrored performers revolving like a human disco
ball.
Sounds mixed by Vincent Baker (aka 7hz).
The Laughing Lounge brings the public together
for a laughing marathon leaving behind the rational
in order to get to the real stuff deep inside…
