jack the pelican presents
Jillian McDonald ME AND BILLY BOB

Press release

THE MATTHEW BARNEY SHOW is an outgrowth of CremasterFanatic.com, a web-based project Eric Doeringer launched in 2004. CremasterFanatic.com appears to be a “fan site” dedicated to Matthew Barney but is actually a conceptual artwork exploring the idea of fandom and the intersection between the art world and popular culture.  Doeringer chose Barney as a subject over other “art stars” because Barney’s photogenic features and romance with Icelandic pop singer Bjork have propelled his celebrity beyond the confines of the art world.

THE MATTHEW BARNEY SHOW combines artwork from artists influenced by Matthew Barney, art created by Doeringer under a variety of pseudonyms, and Doeringer’s collection of Matthew Barney ephemera.  The result is a blend of fact and fiction that plays upon Barney’s own interest in states of indeterminacy.  Timed to coincide with the US premier of Barney’s Drawing Restraint 9 and the opening of his Occidental Guest exhibition at Gladstone Gallery, THE MATTHEW BARNEY SHOW seeks to both exploit and augment the hype that accompanies any new Matthew Barney project.

Cremaster.com was reviewed last year by Choire Sicha in The New York Times. To read, click here. Eric Doeringer's other projects, including his infamous Bootlegs series have also received much attention.

Doeringer's CremasterFanatic.com project begs comparison with Jillian McDonald's Me and Billy exhibition, running concurrently at Jack the Pelican. Both use faux fansites on the Web as a primary medium to address issues of popular celebrity. In very different ways. Click here.
